WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT FROM A REPUTABLE GERMAN PINSCHER BREEDER?
1) COMPLETE AND UP TO DATE HEALTH TESTING ON BOTH PARENTS - Results should be verifiable on the OFA website. Do not accept unverifiable results or copies of certificates - ask to see the original documents if the breeder has refused to post their test results on the public OFA website. Hips, a passing eye exam dated within one year of the birth of your puppy, a screening by a certified cardiologist NOT a general vet, vWD testing if either parent is a DNA carrier or the puppy has not been cleared by DNA of the parents or grandparents.
2) A PEDIGREE WITH ALL KNOWN HEALTH TESTING AND ISSUES NOTED - clear health testing on parents only tells you a portion of the story. Young parents may have all the required testing done with passing results. A more in-depth look at the health testing of the grandparents and great grandparents will help to inform you as to whether there are potential health issues in the bloodlines that may impact your puppy. Reputable breeders will provide full disclosure of all known health testing done on several generations of the pedigree not just the parents. Seeing an entire pedigree for health is important to ensuring the puppy buyer is making an informed decision when purchasing a dog that will be with them for many years to come. Do understand that in older generations there may be less information available as less testing was completed years ago than is done today.
3) AN OPEN DOOR POLICY - You should be welcome to visit the breeders home and/or kennel and see the puppies, the dam of the litter and all other adult GP residents. You should be allowed to interact with all adult dogs as well as the puppies. If the adult dogs show aggression toward you or you are not allowed to visit freely with the adult dogs, then you should suspect temperament problems.
4) AN OPEN LIST OF PUPPY BUYERS - If you cannot visit the breeders premises in person, ask the breeder to provide you with names and e-mail/phone numbers for ALL owners from their last few litters. Breeders must complete an AKC litter record on each litter produced. The AKC litter record contains the AKC number, AKC name, owner name/address/phone number for each puppy in the litter. Breeders can easily compile a list of all puppies in a litter along with an e-mail address or phone number. Contact all buyers and ask them about their dogs and any health or temperament problems they have had. Some buyers may not respond to your request for information but you will get some who will. A reputable breeder will provide you with all their buyer's contact info not just the contact info from those buyers guaranteed to give them a glowing recommendation.
5) A MICROCHIPPED PUPPY and AKC REGISTERED PUPPY. Reputable breeders do not allow puppies to leave their care without permanent identification and a completed AKC litter registration. Breeders may hold individual puppy registrations until a spay/neuter certificate is provided by the buyer, but they should provide you with an AKC number to show the litter has been registered. In instances where registrations are held by the breeder, you will not get your papers until the puppy is altered.

Breeders should be prepared to tell you why they put a particular sire and dam together with regards to health, temperament and conformation. If that information is not offered, ask questions, and expect answers based on more than show records or wins.
Leia is the mother of our first November litter. She is Can Ch Rivendells Leende Leia from Sweden. Leia is 2 years old and has tested with clear eyes (Sept 2011) and OFA good hips (prelim), clear cardio, clear for vWD and Thyroid normal. She also has excellent temperament and comes from a long line of dogs with "A" hips in Sweden. Leia's pedigree shows a few incidences of cataracts, none being the severe posterior type. Since some cataracts can be hereditary (especially ones in posterior or back of the eye), any mate I choose for my girls must 1) have clear eyes and 2) have a clear health pedigree.
Leia has been bred to Australian Ch Masterkarn BoyzNBlack, a two year old male imported from Australia. "Zeus" has a clear pedigree for eyes. He has OFA good hips, eyes clear, cardio clear, vWD clear. He has a lovely friendly temperament and is close to finishing his American Championship.
The mother of our second November litter is three year old Zoobie. Zoobie has OFA Good hips, Eyes clear in September 2011, Cardio clear, vWD clear. Zoobie's pedigree also shows a few incidences of cataracts in the grandparent and great grandparent generations, none being the severe posterior type. Zoobie has been bred to 5 year old Ch SD Ebony Simba's Pride, a group placing GP. He has OFA Excellent hips, vWD clear, Eyes clear in June 2011. He has a calm and friendly temperament and has a Rally and Obedience titles and is working in agility and obedience. Koby's pedigree is clear for eye issues.
Conformation is also important of course as breeders are also trying to breed a dog that best meets the written description of the perfect German Pinscher. Zeus compliments Leia very well and Zoobie and Koby are also a good match structurally and phenotypically. All are strong and sound dogs of medium build.
